ANNA HOFSTETTER
Anna Hofstetter will be running for re-election as Nashville Town Councilwoman on November 8, 2022. This decision was made for two reasons: The difficulties that independent candidates must face in the State of Indiana and the current state of the Town of Nashville.
The State of Indiana has very strict laws for third party candidates, which explains the fact that we have never seen an Independent ever elected into the Statehouse. Nonetheless, Anna feels a moral aversion to both predominant parties, and will run as an Independent in order to represent the people, rather than be coerced by special interest groups or party politics.
However, it is an uphill battle. Current state election law requires independent candidates to collect signatures from 2% of the registered constituency of the district, these hand written signatures are then double verified through the county clerks and then the state election division. Anna began collecting signatures in February, and submitted more than the minimum two weeks before the June deadline…she was then informed that the Brown County Clerk’s office had given her the wrong petition form! BTW the correct and incorrect forms are nearly identical…just another catch 22 to prevent third parties with a fighting chance.
With just 2 weeks to spare Anna and her volunteers works extremely hard circulating petitions, but there are only so many house in the day and came up short by the day of the deadline.
Simultaneously, the Town of Nashville has undergone some things that are just not okay. The Town President was making unilateral decisions without consulting council such as entering into a contract with a private water utility company — to potentially privatize the Nashville Water Utility. The Town Consultant seemed to be overstepping boundaries and operating with ulterior motives. Anna cannot ignore potential corruption especially in her Town! Several citizens asked her to stay which definitely meant something to Anna.
At that point, there were two choices: appeal the election commission and try to get credit for both petition forms; or maintain focus on the Town to ensure integrity and a smooth transition.
Anna decided to focus on her most immediate neighbors’ needs. She just didn’t feel good about leaving the Town in the hands of the current council.
